Disciplines
Occupational Therapy is a health care profession that is concerned with restoring useful physical functionality following disabling accidents and sickness. The goal of occupational therapy is to assist the patient in achieving the maximum level of independent function.
The primary tool of the occupational therapists is the active involvement of the patient in therapeutic tasks and activities which, while improving function, help the patient learn to apply the newly restored or impaired function in meeting the demands of daily living.
Services typically include:
- Customized treatment programs to improve one's ability to perform daily activities
- Comprehensive home and job site evaluations with adaptation recommendations
- Performance skills assessments and treatment
- Adaptive equipment recommendations and usage training
- Guidance to family members and caregivers
Physical Therapy is a direct form of professional patient care that can be applied in most disciplines of medicine. It provides a hands-on component which can partner with physicians who have medical expertise in neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, general surgery, family practice, pediatrics, geriatrics, rheumatology, internal medicine, urology, cardiovascular medicine, cardiopulmonary medicine, psychiatry, and sports medicine.
The objectives of physical therapy are:
- Prevention of disability and pain
- Restoration of function and relief from pain
- Promotion of healing
- Adaptation to permanent disability
Physical therapy is a vital part of the total care for patients who have problems of temporary or permanent disability. A medical referral is often made post-operatively, following stroke, upon recognition of birth defects, and following injury or illness.
Through referral from a physician, speech language pathology services are provided to individuals from infancy through geriatrics. Infants and toddlers may receive speech therapy if they have feeding and swallowing problems, or need assistance developing verbal communication. Preschool children may require some extra help to learn basic skills such as communicating needs and wants. School-age children often go to speech therapy to learn to correct articulation errors and improve language skills. Adults may see a speech therapist if they have voice problems or a brain injury that has affected communication or swallowing. Speech therapists also serve the geriatric population by addressing communication and swallowing difficulties after stroke or other illnesses. Services typically include:
- speech and language skills
- listening and understanding
- augmentative and alternative communication, such as sign language or using a communication device
- swallowing disorders
- cognitive skills including organization, memory, and word retrieval
